Terra baixa (Reconstrucció d’un crim)

Àngel Guimerà amb versió de Pablo Ley

This is a 21st century look at a great classic of Catalan theater.

Pablo Ley turns Àngel Guimerà’s classic play into a detective story and an extraordinary thriller about the class struggle.

Without losing sight of the origins or changing the essence of this universal text, Pablo Ley’s dramaturgy sets Terra baixa in the 20th century, to Anarchist Barcelona, and introduces two new characters: a journalist and a police inspector, Vinagret, who will be responsible for investigating a crime in which a worker has murdered his employer. Manelic has killed Sebastià to free Marta (and himself).

A contemporary and intense perspective that shifts from rural drama to romantic tragedy and culminates in: “I’ve killed the wolf! I’ve killed the wolf! I’ve killed the wolf!” The cry of freedom of the working class fighting against oppression.

A tale of intrigue and uprising that will keep you glued to your seat.

“Behind Manelic's crime of passion clearly beats a social drama that, read from the 21st century, anticipates the history of the 20th century in many ways. The worker (Manelic) who confronts his master (Sebastià) to liberate his future (Marta) is a transcript of the class struggle, and one does not need much imagination to see in it an origin that is not far removed from the Civil War (with as many prelude as you like: the Tragic Week, the Bolshevik Triennium, the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera...). Guimerà certainly considered, in his own way, social justice, but he could hardly imagine a world in which the Russian Revolution or the rise of fascism would take place and even less so that the confrontation between these two forces would end in a devastating world war.”
