La plaça del diamant
Mercè Rodoreda
Adaptation of Mercè Rodoreda’s novel portraying post-war Barcelona through a love story
La plaça del Diamant tells the story of Natàlia, universally known as Colometa, and provides a faithful chronicle of post-war Barcelona and particularly the neighbourhood of Gràcia. Natàlia is one of the many girls who accept with resignation their life and marriage during the Spanish Second Republic. Once the Civil War is over, in a Barcelona which is no longer the same, Colometa wants to stop being Colometa. Benet i Jornet, the author of the adaptation, argues that “while in the novel we hear Colometa’s inner voice, on the stage we see her gaze. This is the difference that we had to accept, assume and develop. And we have done so with all the passion and exasperation that an incommensurable book awakens in us.” A wonderful love story, as Mercè Rodoreda says, without sentimentality and yet full of emotions.
